The Department of Analysis was established by János Aczél in 1953. Heads of the department in chronological order: János Aczél (1953-1964), András Rapcsák (1965-1968), Zoltán Daróczy (1968-1984), Károly Lajkó (1984-1986), László Losonczi (1986-1992), Zsolt Páles (1994-2001, 2007-2010 & 2013- ), Gyula Maksa (2001-2007) and Lajos Molnár (2010-2013). Research activity:

From the earliest times the main research field of the department determining its basic profile even present days is the theory of functional equations and inequalities. However, from the late 80's the research spectrum has been enlarging significantly. In fact, beside functional equations and inequalities, presently extensive investigations are being carried on also in such important areas of mathematical analysis as linear functional analysis, convex and non-smooth analysis, and harmonic analysis.

The members of the department regularly participate in international conferences relating to their research interests and report on their new results. Besides, the research team of the department organizes on a regular basis the following conferences:

  • Debrecen - Katowice Winter Seminar on Functional Equations and Inequalities

  • Conference on Inequalities and Applications

The international connections of the department are wide and manifested in different kinds of scientific cooperations with researchers from the following countries: Canada, Germany, Japan, Poland, Slovenia, USA.

Teaching activity:

The teaching spectrum of the department in considerably large and involves courses for math students of such quantity that covers all essential parts of mathematical analysis. Beside the compulsory courses, a wide variety of optional courses are also offered especially to MSc and PhD students. Moreover, the department provides several analysis related courses to students of computer science, engineering, physics and biology.
